Her son John Carter Cash suggested that an affair was likely. He often spoke of how Elvis would stay over, and how his father was jealous of Elvis. Now, we’re looking at the truth behind the rumors.

The Rumors of June Carter and Elvis Presley

One thing is known: June Carter and Johnny Cash had a 12-year love affair that eventually led to them marrying. However, before that, rumors circulated that June was involved with Elvis.

Even Johnny believed the rumors. He was jealous of The King of Rock and Roll, even though Elvis introduced Carter to Cash’s music—leading to the start of their love affair. Elvis often sang Johnny’s songs to her.

June was not the only woman Elvis was linked to back in the day. He was linked to many women he worked with, giving the rumors of an affair with June some weight.

There was also the potential that the two were distantly related. Their families were close, and it led to June traveling on tour with Elvis a few times. They were often joined by June’s mother and sisters.

Johnny Cash Was Not the Only One Jealous

While John Carter Cash can talk about his own experiences seeing his mom and Elvis together and how his father was jealous, there are reports of June’s first husband also being jealous of The King, according to The Express.

June married Carl Smith in 1952. They did not have a happy marriage. Troubles arose as Elvis grew in popularity in 1955.

Carl was sure that something happened between June and Elvis on multiple occasions, but those thoughts were never proven. June said that she never had an affair with Elvis.

John shared “Though Mom always maintained that she never had an affair with Elvis, Carl (her first husband) believed differently and perhaps for good reason. After Carl moved out of their Madison home, Mom would sometimes let Elvis stay at the house to ‘rest’ after a tour.”

June told her son that his father was always jealous of the man. John remembers the “mischievous twinkle in her eye” when she would talk about The King.

Despite the jealousy, Elvis and Cash remained friends. Elvis would play Cash’s songs on jukeboxes when he traveled with June to make sure she and the whole world knew about him.

June has never admitted to any affair with Elvis. She did tell her son she wondered what it would have been like had she fallen in love with Elvis, but her heart was for Cash.

The second she met him, there were sparks. June and Johnny were able to marry in 1968, two years after they divorced their spouses at the time. They were together until June died in 2003.
