Denzel Washington is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, with blockbuster hits like Training Day, Flight, and The Equalizer. But things haven’t been perfect for the actor and his wife, who have been married for 41 years and have four adult children. It appears that the couple struggled to chart a path forward as their kids grew up and began their own lives.
Denzel Washington and Wife’s, Pauletta, Relationship
Denzel Washington and wife Pauletta Pearson met while working together on the set of Wilma in 1977. After numerous attempts on Denzel’s part, Pauletta finally agreed to a date, and the pair married in 1983.
With Pauletta and Denzel being actors, they found it hard to balance their work and home life. More specifically, in raising their four children. The couple made things work by never emphasizing one’s career over the other.
However, Pauletta eventually paused her ambitions to raise and care for her children when they were young. Even after landing starring roles in blockbuster films, Denzel continued to support his wife’s singing and acting career and ensure she could fulfill her own dreams.
Despite being married for over forty years, Denzel recently discussed the struggles he and his wife have gone through. He went on to explain that many times, the two did not see eye to eye, but he credits good communication with their staying together.

Additionally, Denzel acknowledges that religion plays a major part in the couple’s relationship. The two are devout Christians who regularly pray together.
Denzel and Pauletta’s children are also at the center of their lives. They have remained committed to putting their children first, but not everything has been perfect for the family over the years.
Denzel Washington’s Wife’s Alleged Full-On Breakdown
In an interview, Denzel said that his kids growing up and moving out were particularly hard on his wife. That is common for many people, as parents can never be fully prepared for their kids’ growing up.
One day, while Denzel was traveling for work, Pauletta reportedly had a full-on breakdown. After the children moved out, Pauletta was left in the empty home and simply couldn’t stand being by herself. Denzel explained that Pauletta called him at 1 A.M. and left a message that she was driving around, but something was clearly wrong.

Fortunately, she didn’t go far as she drove around the driveway. According to Denzel, she apparently remained in the car all night. The event was a wake-up call for Denzel, who later realized that Pauletta was having a nervous breakdown.
Despite that rough patch, Denzel and Pauletta have seemingly made things work.
The duo’s children are also doing well. John Washington notably played professional football before following in his parent’s footsteps by becoming an actor. His sister, Olivia, also followed in their parent’s footsteps by becoming an actress.
