Nicole Richie’s kids are growing up fast. As the daughter of a famous celebrity herself, Nicole has tried her best to keep daughter Harlow and son Sparrow out of the public spotlight.
With both kids now well into their teens, they are becoming their own people, and through social media, we have been able to learn more about them as individuals. Here’s what we know.

As reported in People Magazine, Harlow has inherited her mom’s passion for fashion. In 2018, Nicole gushed about her daughter, telling People about her love for makeup and how different their beauty routines were.
Although they both love style, Nicole has stressed that Harlow’s style “doesn’t have anything to do with me.” She described Harlow as being “a different beast than me.” When Harlow was younger, Nicole said she was much more of an introvert, and would often hide away when the family joined the kids’ father, Joel Madden, on tour.
Nicole shared, “Sometimes my daughter doesn’t even come. She’s a little more reserved. She’ll hand out on the bus and do art.”
Harlow Attended a Women’s March
Despite the differences in their personalities, Nicole made sure that they could share moments together when it came to the important stuff. She raised Harlow to be a feminist and once attended a Women’s March together in 2018 alongside the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Adele.
In fact, Nicole shared that it was actually Harlow herself who suggested that they go. The reality star explained, “Her and her friends had decided they wanted to go. It was their decision… I really loved it. I was so happy that she was there.”

It seemed like that might have been the moment Harlow started to come out of her shell, just as Nicole said she wanted her to. Nicole told People, “I want her to have power in her voice and confidence with her voice and feelings.”
As the years have gone by, Harlow has grown more and more comfortable in herself, as Nicole has occasionally shown off in birthday posts. As Nicole put it on her daughter’s 13th birthday, “Nothing is better than watching you become the young woman you are.”
Sparrow Has Always Been an Individual
Just like his sister, Sparrow makes his own decisions when it comes to his outfits. Even when he was only 3 years old, his mom talked about his individual taste, and how stubborn he could be about getting what he wanted. She said in 2013 that Sparrow “needs the bandana tied around the belt… he has to have all of his sleeves cut off of his shirts.”

Photos of both kids online have been a rare sight, with their parents preferring to keep them private. On Sparrow’s 11th birthday, his dad shared an Instagram post in which he wrote, “Here’s to many more years of being best friends and me embarrassing you.”
Although Nicole is obviously overjoyed about her kids, she has also talked about the struggle of being a working mom. In 2015, she explained, “It’s just about doing what you can, finding the balance in your own life… it’s a constant game of prioritizing.” But whatever Nicole and Joel have been doing, it looks like it’s paying off, with both their kids flourishing and learning the importance of being yourself and owning your voice.
