Todd and Julie Chrisley have started to pay off their $17.2 million restitution fee. The couple sold their large mansion in Brentwood, Tennessee, for $5.2 million in April 2023, as reported by TMZ. The $17.2 million restitution fee is part of the sentence their judge placed on them following their guilty verdict for tax evasion and bank fraud.

The sale of the home occurred off the market. Off-the-market in real estate means that the house was for sale but was never publicly listed on any real estate sites. The real estate agent will take the listing to a procured list of possible buyers. Since the sale of the property was never made public, it took some time for people to realize that the Chrisleys had sold the house in the first place. The sale occurred while the two were in jail, serving their sentence.

The house itself is a massive property that stretches across 13,279 square feet. Some fans of their show, Chrisley Knows Best, will have seen glimpses of the mansion during its final season.

It contains an indoor basketball court, a professional kitchen with the latest cookware and appliances, a large pool with accompanying jacuzzi, and even hand-painted wallpaper in the main living room. The house was featured a few times on Chrisley Knows Best, particularly when the couple was hosting dinner parties in its dining room or when Todd was working in his study.

Despite the sale of their home, the Chrisleys still have a substantial debt to pay to the court.

The Chrisley’s Legal Proceedings

According to The Tennessean, they have also received some money while in jail. The state of Georgia ended up paying the Chrisleys $1 million through a settlement. The couple had filed a lawsuit against Joshua Waites, the former Director of Special Investigations for Georgia’s Department of Revenue. The lawsuit claimed that Joshua had committed misconduct while investigating Todd and Julie for tax evasion. The state of Georgia settled the lawsuit by paying them $1 million.

This occurred just after the federal government indicted Todd and Julie for tax evasion and bank fraud. The indictment alleged that Julie and Todd had given banks and other financial institutions false information.

This information allowed them to receive millions of dollars in loans, which they used primarily for their own personal benefit. To pay off the loans, they then took out new loans to pay down their old loans. They were eventually found guilty of tax evasion and defrauding banks out of over $30 million.

In addition, Julie faced a few more charges. She was also found guilty of wire fraud and obstruction of justice. Todd was sentenced to 12 years in jail, which he is currently serving at Federal Prison Camp Pensacola in Florida. Julie was sentenced to 7 years in jail. She’s currently serving that time at Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Their sentences started in January 2023.

According to Page Six, their eldest children, Chase and Savannah Chrisley, still maintain the innocence of their parents. Savannah has even taken over custody of her youngest brother, Grayson, and her adopted sister, Chloe. Todd and Julie have also filed an appeal over the court’s decision in an attempt to reverse their charge.

Todd and Julie Chrisley have scored a major win in their legal battle against their current prison sentences. The Chrisleys have been awarded a $1 million settlement regarding their lawsuit in which they alleged misconduct in the investigation against them.

People Magazine reported that a lawyer for the couple announced the settlement. They will recieve $1 million from the state of Georgia to resolve their federal lawsuit against Joshua Waites. Waites is the former Director of Special Investigations of the State Department of Revenue. The lawsuit was first filed in 2019.

The family lawyer, Alex Little, made a public statement following the announcement of the settlement. He said, “We have been saying for months that the criminal case against the Chrisleys was highly unusual and had real problems.” He went on to add that “this settlement is an encouraging sign.”

The statement continued, “It’s nearly unprecedented for one arm of the government to pay money to defendants while another arm is fighting to keep them in jail.” 

Todd and Julie Took Legal Action Following The Investigation

The investigation into the Chrisleys lasted two years. The investigation cleared the couple of a $2 million state tax evasion charge.

The Chrisley Knows Best stars had been investigated for tax irregularities between 2008 and 2016. People reported that the Georgia Department of Revenue had agreed that they had overpaid in four of those years. According to a press release obtained by People, the couple owed nothing for the other four years. They had a net liability of less than $77,000 in overdue taxes for just one year of incorrect filing. 

Todd said in a statement at the time, “Julie and I knew all along that we had done nothing wrong and that when the facts all came out, we would be fine.” 

About a week after they were cleared of the charge, Todd and Julie took legal action against Joshua Waites. According to People, they claimed that the former director had been “specifically targeting” the celebrity family. According to the lawsuit, Todd and Julie’s first lawyer had some strong words for the initial charges filed against them. He said they were “a shocking example of how an out-of-control public servant can abuse his office and violate the rights of innocent citizens.”

The lawsuit also claimed that the director allegedly “began to focus his efforts and desire” on the Chrisley family, particularly Todd and his estranged daughter Lindsie. Todd and Julie accused him of targeting the 34-year-old Lindsie in an attempt to get information about the family. The lawsuit also alleged that when Lindsie failed to give him information, he showed her her parents’ private tax information.

Todd and Julie are both still serving their respective prison sentences. As of now, Todd still has another 9 years of his sentence to serve, while Julie still has 4.
