For the past few years, Britney Spears has had a difficult relationship with her sons, 18-year old Sean Preston and 17-year old Jayden James. The issues stem from her use of social media over the years, as well as some things she included in her 2023 memoir. Thankfully, things seem to be on the mend, and the trio is open to repairing their relationship.
Britney Spears shares the children with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline. Spears and Federline were married from 2004 to 2007, and they had an incredibly public relationship and eventual divorce. After the divorce was finalized, Federline was granted sole physical custody of the kids.
Why Britney Spears’ Sons Decided To Not See Her Anymore
Eventually, Spears was given visitation rights and the children began to spend more time with their mom. The two co-parented their children for years, but things have gotten difficult between the boys and Spears over the recent years.
After getting free from her conservatorship in 2021, Britney Spears was a free woman and began posting on social media, often in little clothing or even fully in the nude at times. According to reports, her children were very uncomfortable with this. She continued to post these types of photos, and this ultimately led to the boys deciding not to see her anymore, according to Federline.
Federline said he told his sons that this was just another way for their mother to express herself, but did acknowledge that it’s likely difficult for teens in high school to go through this.
Her sons weren’t even at her 2022 wedding to her now ex-husband Sam Asghari, though the boys did wish her well and were happy for her. In addition to her social media use, her sons also didn’t like a few things she talked about in her 2023 memoir called “The Woman in Me”. Reports say they were devastated by the revelations and felt it was “too much” and difficult to read at times.
In particular, the boys were upset about her mentioning that she had an abortion in the past while dating Justin Timberlake, as well as how harshly their father was portrayed in the book.
Things Are Going In The Right Direction For Britney Spears and Sons
Also in 2023, Spears consented to the boys moving with Federline to Hawaii. While she hasn’t been to visit them in Hawaii and has only spoken to them sparingly via text, things seem to be trending in the right direction as of late.
Recently, they spoke on the phone to one another, and her sons are reportedly happy to see her doing well and want to stay in touch to speak with her, which is certainly a step in the right direction for the family.
So while there is still progress to be made between Britney and her sons, both sides are willing to mend the relationship. However, it may take quite a bit of time and effort by all parties if they want to get back to being a happy family after all that’s transpired over the years.
