Why did Celine stop performing in the first place, and what are her plans for the future? Here’s what we found out:

    Celine’s Forced Hiatus

Celine was forced to take a long break from performing, following an unfortunate diagnosis with “stiff person syndrome”. She battled the condition for years, dealing with painful spasms and seizures along the way.

Now, she’s returned to the stage to sing for fans around the world. Only, she has to pay extra close attention to her health to avoid triggering her condition mid-performance. NBC Philadelphia reported that she had revealed her diagnosis to the world back in 2022.

But, according to PageSix, Celine is already preparing to start a residency with Resorts World as early as late 2024. One of the publications sources was quoted saying:

“She has a passion for getting back onstage, and she’s gonna do it.”

“I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through. […] Recently I have been diagnosed with a very rare neurological syndrome, which affects something like one in a million people.”

Unfortunately, her health condition causes muscles in her body to stiffen in response to stress and even certain kinds of noise. This makes putting on a concert quite an ordeal for her to handle.

She expressed her confusion as to how she would manage her condition as a performer in her documentary, “I am: Celine Dion”, following a particularly difficult episode. According to PageSix, her words were:

“Well, what am I gonna do? […] If I can’t get stimulated by what I love, and then I’m gonna go onstage and, like, you’re gonna put the pulse oximeter on me and you’re gonna turn me on my back?”

Celine Dion Said, ‘… Feeling My Body Leaving Me …’

Despite her difficulties, Celine has already managed to return to the stage in Paris, performing at the Eiffel Tower without missing a beat, according to NBC Philadelphia.

As for her initial diagnosis’ revelation and the rationale behind it, she has since explained that she couldn’t keep hiding her struggles from the world anymore. NBC Philadelphia reported her stating:

“I should have stopped, take the time to figure it out,” Dion said. “My (late) husband (René Angélil), as well, was fighting for his own life.

I had to raise my kids. I had to hide. I had to try to be a hero. Feeling my body leaving me, holding onto my own dreams. And the lying for me … the burden was too much.”

Now that she is performing once again, she seems determined to persevere. She told NBC Philadelphia that:

“It’s not hard to do a show now, it’s hard to cancel a show. I’m working hard every day, but I have to admit — it’s been a struggle. I miss it so much. The people. I miss them. If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk. I’ll crawl. I won’t stop.”
