Harrison Butker is the Superbowl-winning kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs. His teammate is Travis Kelce, who is in love with Taylor Swift.
Life sounds pretty good for Harrison, but he gave an incredibly bad speech last weekend. NBC News reported that Harrison is getting “blasted” for his ridiculous remarks.
Harrison was selected to give the commencement speech at Benedictine College, where he used a Taylor Swift quote to try and get his twisted point across.
NBC reported that Harrison “attacked working women” during the commencement speech, encouraging the female graduates to be “homemakers.” According to Harrison, that’s one of the “most important” titles a woman can hold.
The bizarre twist in this story is that Harrison was speaking to the graduates of a Catholic “liberal arts school” in Atchison, Kansas. NBC wrote that Harrison also “railed against” Pride Month, COVID lockdown measures, and a woman’s right to choose.
But when Harrison quoted one of Taylor’s song lyrics, he actually drew shocked “murmurs from the crowd.” This sounds unbelievable, but Harrison told the graduates, “As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘familiarity breeds contempt.”
He used a line from Taylor’s song “Bejeweled” to explain why Catholic priests should not become “overly familiar” with their parishioners. That makes absolutely no sense. It made even less sense when Harrison claimed to know how those young female students were feeling on graduation day.
Harrison wondered how many of the female graduates were “thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career.” He truly believes that the “majority” of female graduates are “most excited about” getting married and becoming mothers.
Harrison Has Received Immense Backlash
How can Harrison understand how a woman’s mind works? Well, he claimed that his wife would say her life didn’t begin until she fulfilled her “vocation as a wife and as a mother.” At least Harrison admitted that his wife made his own professional success possible, according to NBC.
It’s pretty obvious to Swifties that Harrison has no clue about Taylor’s music or what she stands for. His bizarre speech drew a ton of backlash online, including from people you’d never expect, like “self-proclaimed Swiftie, Flavor Fav” of Public Enemy fame.
Lisa Guerrero is an investigative journalist for “Inside Edition” and a former NFL sideline reporter. She blasted Harrison on social media by issuing an ultimatum to the league. Lisa wrote, “Hey @NFL — if you want to continue to grow your female fan base and any other marginalized group… come get your boy.”

Michael McWhorter is a filmmaker with millions of TikTok followers. In a video, he said that there’s “nothing wrong with [Harrison’s] wife being a homemaker.” But Michael wasn’t letting Harrison off the hook.
Michael added that Harrison “seemed to be acting as if you should be ashamed if you don’t want to be a homemaker.” Tens of thousands of people out there right now would agree with Michael.
NBC reported that a petition started on Change.org to get Harrison “dismissed” from the Chiefs for his “discriminatory remarks” and for creating a “toxic environment.” Currently, the online petition has almost 19,000 signatures.
Harrison’s spokesperson hasn’t responded to the media’s requests for comment. The Chiefs and officials from Benedictine College haven’t responded either. But an unnamed NFL spokesperson made it clear to People Magazine that Harrison’s speech was “personal” and his “views are not those of the NFL.”
