Erykah Badu has dated some of the world’s most famous rappers. There’s a pretty bizarre conspiracy theory that she has a sort of power over the men she’s with.
It’s become such a talked about thing that even Erykah and a few of her exes have spoken about it. You’re not going to believe what they had to say about the “Erykah Badu Effect.”
So, what exactly is this mystical influence that she supposedly has over men? Well, according to some people, she just has a way of making guys fall head over heels for her.
They fall so hard for her that they allegedly change their style, in terms of their music and look. Her exes, Andre 3000 and the rapper Common have often been listed as examples of that.
But how did she earn this kind of reputation? It seems it’s hard to put it into words, but there are people who have tried, including Erykah herself.
According to Global Grind, she once explained her own theory about her urban legend in an interview. She was asked about her effect on the men in her life.
Erykah reportedly said that she’d learned just as much from them as they’d learned from her. She described herself as a cold person, but added that the people she was with were cold, too – they were a reflection of that.
Then, she finished with- Become a cold person, and the men will just come like magnets. Maybe there’s some truth to her words because she has attracted all kinds of famous men in the music industry.
Andre 3000 Wrote a Song About Their Relationship
Her first high-profile relationship was with Andre 3000. The Fader reported on Erykah’s interview with Red Bull Music Academy Talk, where she opened up about meeting Andre 3000.
She shared that they met at a club in New York sometime in 1995, and her song On & On was played. Two years later, the song was officially released on February 7th. A few days after that, she got pregnant with Andre’s baby.
According to Global Grind, when Erykah and Andre were together, he began to change his fashion style. He stopped wearing Atlanta Braves jerseys and loose-fitting jeans and took on the more peculiar and unique look that he wears to this day.
Apparently, he really began to experiment with his musical style during their relationship. When Andre got famous with OutKast, he was immediately considered a little out there.
He wasn’t afraid to take risks with his hairstyle or his clothes, and his music was totally original. So, it looks like Erykah had quite a big influence on him.
We all know that his Grammy-award-winning song Ms. Jackson was allegedly inspired by the breakup that he had with Erykah. It’s rumored that the “Ms. Jackson” character in the song was actually based on her mom.
Global Grind also reported that the couple’s breakup had nothing to do with Andre being unfaithful. Erykah reportedly said that infidelity was not a deal-breaker for her.
She shared that she needed companionship. She needed a partner that she could depend on and that she could love and grow with. Erykah said that she understood the nature of the men she’d been with and men in general – they had a need to chase.
Common Addressed the Rumors of Erykah’s “Mystic Charm”
Andre may have referenced his relationship with Erykah in his music, but he’s never publicly addressed her supposed spell-binding ways. But one of her exes has, and he had some seriously shocking things to say about her.
Erykah went out with Common for two years. During that time, Common’s style changed pretty drastically.
His collaboration with Erykah on the song Love Of My Life (Ode To Hip-Hop) got him his first Grammy. So, clearly, she had a pretty big effect on his career, too.
Rolling Out reported that he started experimenting with his music around 2002, right in the middle of his relationship with Erykah. Some of his fans reportedly weren’t impressed by his album Electric Circus because of the more unusual sound that it had. It wasn’t as mainstream as before.

There were whispers that it was thanks to his then-girlfriend. He had adopted a more artsy and unorthodox lifestyle in general.
It doesn’t seem like Common had any problem opening up about the effect his ex had on him, though. He reportedly admitted that she was his first love.
In a 2014 interview on The Combat Jack Show, he actually addressed the rumor of Erykah’s mystic charm. He started by joking that the ‘Badu Box’ was real and that it could take you to another universe. But then he got more serious and revealed that when he met her, he saw that she was really special.
Erykah Broke up With Common Over the Phone
It wasn’t just physical. It wasn’t just her looks. He said that it was like something kind of spirit-wise where he realized that she was a woman who had something else.
Common added that he just appreciated her for different aspects. She was super-talented, real fresh, and into new stuff he just wasn’t up on.
But I guess he didn’t want to give her all the credit for the changes he made in his life back then. He told the show´s host that she wouldn’t tell him what to wear. He was the one who decided that.

Common explained that when moving to New York, he had the aspirations to do something new, to change, to grow, and to just try new things. But he admitted that she definitely was an influence because she introduced him to certain people who were creative artists.
According to Common, Erykah broke up with him over the phone. He reportedly said that she just called him and said- “Hey, I don’t wanna be in this relationship no more. I’m liking somebody else.”
Erykah later went on to date Jay Electronica. They had a daughter named Mars who was born in 2009.
It’s not clear when exactly they broke up. But after their split, he let the whole world know that he probably wasn’t really over his ex. In a series of tweets that he posted one night before a show, Jay confessed that he didn’t care what happened, Erykah belonged to him. It really served as more evidence to support this urban legend that men seem to go a little crazy for her.
Erykah Takes Advantage of the Rumors
In one way, the conspiracy theory can be seen as somewhat flattering to Erykah. But at the same time, it can also be seen as a little offensive. This idea that Erykah uses some sort of mystical powers to put love spells on her partners is honestly crazy.
Apparently, Erykah doesn’t let the rumors get under her skin. During an interview with Joe Budden, he asked her what she did to make men become so attached to her. Her reply was simple – she said that she listened to them.
But it was when she was interviewed by Vulture in 2018 that she really opened up about her take on her man-eating reputation. The interviewer told Erykah that they’d listened to her conversation with Joe Budden, and asked if she felt frustrated to have that legend following her around.
She explained that she took advantage of it. It was a good thing if people thought she was supposed to be some mystical creature that controlled people’s minds.
When she was asked how she took advantage of it, Erykah said that she kept the prestige going. She kept up the idea that she was mystical. She shared that the thing about the legend was that she got blamed if rappers did good or did bad – either way, people thought those rappers got all confused by her presence.
Erykah went on to say that some people talked about her like she was a love goddess, a magical creature, a unicorn. Those things were part of how people perceived her.
She admitted that she never thought of it as derogatory. She found it all hilarious. It meant she was powerful, in a loving way.
