Back in 2002, Brandy shared on The Oprah Winfrey Show that she was recently married and six months pregnant. Her husband? Robert Smith.

Why Did Brandy Lie About Her Marriage?
Brandy shared that they had secretly married in the summer of 2001, and that they kept their marriage a secret to avoid people making a big deal about it.
Fans were happy for the Moesha star at the time. They wanted to see her happy with someone who was worthy of her heart and passion. Brandy and Smith certainly looked happy on the outside. It was only after the birth of their daughter, Sy’rai, that their relationship failed and the two separated.
Cheat Sheet shares that the lies came out during a cameo of Never Have I Ever, when Brandy said that she had never been married. She shared that she faked the marriage back in 2002 to preserve the image of that “perfect family.” She did go on to say that they had a “spiritual union.”
Brandy explained more during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. She shared that back in 2002, having a child out of wedlock was a big deal. It wasn’t accepted in the way that it is now, and she worried what that would mean for her reputation. The idea of having a child out of wedlock was a sin, so she and Smith decided that it would be better to lie.
She told Oprah: “It was not something that people praised, you know. It was a sin. And I felt like I could not be honest about that. I felt the pressure of having to be perfect.”
It was a difficult time period for many, especially for an actress who was used to playing role models for young children. She feared that everything she had worked hard for would be gone because of being pregnant without getting married.
Will Brandy Norwood Get Married in the Future?
Is marriage on the cards for Brandy in the future? Don’t count on it.
Over the years, Brandy has been connected to various men and she has been engaged, but she didn’t make it down the aisle. She doesn’t intend to, either. According to Essence, she makes it clear that she doesn’t date. She enjoys the single life.
She told The Real hosts back in 2020, “I haven’t been on a date in like a year.”
She is more than happy with motherhood and focusing on her career right now. There is a shift for many women now choosing to be single. For many women, there is the ability to have more freedom, and Brandy certainly echoed that. She shared that it is “so satisfied being….being my myself.”
In the past, she has spoken about how Smith tried to ruin her reputation after their split. She hasn’t spoken out about him recently.
