Nelly and Ashanti’s romantic relationship went from being the talk of the town to ancient history over a decade ago. But, with news of rekindled passion, some fans fear there may be an imbalance in their affections.

The List reported Ashanti citing insecurities and acting “out of character” as major motivators for the couple’s previous breakups. The story isn’t entirely a sad one, though.
How the Two Got Together
Nelly and Ashanti started dating back in 2003. They met at a Grammy Awards press conference when Nelly sarcastically asked Ashanti for her autograph. In an interview with People, she mentioned that she wrote her autograph down on the event’s program for him, but didn’t give him her number for some time.
According to Essence, the two went steady until 2013 before calling it quits for a full decade.
A Decade Off and Now On Again
Since their breakup in 2013, the two haven’t shown many signs of getting back together. There had even been signs of lingering hostility between them. According to Essence, in the 2022 documentary “The Murder Inc Story” Nelly criticized Ashanti for abandoning him when he ran into trouble with the law.

The Murder Inc. Story documentary also clearly showcased some of the issues Ashanti had with Irv Gotti. She was later reported by USA Today to have said that Gotti held a lot of bitterness toward her for having pursued a relationship with Nelly in the first place.
Ashanti Shows Him Love
Despite having hit a few rough patches along the way, Ashanti seems to be committed to patching things up with Nelly. She was seen at the MTV Video Music Awards event with a purse bearing a picture of them both together, according to Essence.
Nelly hasn’t shown up to any events with Ashanti’s face on a backpack yet, but the two have been seen at events in matching outfits recently, including at the QC Music Black Ball in 2023.
Taking Things to the Next Level
Essence reported that Nelly finally admitted the two were an item again in an interview with Love and Hip Hop.
In response to a question about how things are going for them, Nelly had the following to say: “Yeah. I mean because it’s no pressure. You know, before I felt like both of us are doing what we’re doing career-wise. And when you got so many people in the middle of it, it can be tough.”
But, their relationship is more than it was before. This time, the two are making it official and have gotten engaged. CNN reported that the couple shared the news via Essence, on social media.

That’s not all… they have a baby on the way! Given their rocky history and relationship hiatus, no one can really say for sure what the future has in store for Nelly and Ashanti. Still, the news of them finally starting a family may make loyal fans feel better about them being together again.
