Maren Morris filed for divorce from Ryan Hurd on October 2, 2023. On January 8th, Us Weekly reported that Maren and Ryan had reached a divorce settlement in December. Maren cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of their breakup.
After the divorce filing was announced, another Us Weekly source claimed to have details. The source alleged that Ryan “wasn’t expecting” Maren to leave him, saying that Maren’s decision seemed “to have come out of the blue.”
Ryan was defending his former wife on social media barely two weeks before she filed for divorce. This happened when Maren announced that she was leaving country music “for good.” On September 20, 2023, Ryan fought back against Maren’s critics in an Instagram post, writing that Maren deserves to “be celebrated, not just tolerated.”
Ryan confessed online that he was “so sick of watching” Maren receive hate on social media for her progressive beliefs. He wrote that Maren “deserves a little sunshine” for what he called “the burden she has carried for every artist.” He concluded his post, “Love you, MM. Keep on keeping on.”
Us sources obtained a copy of Maren’s divorce filing. The document confirmed that Maren and Ryan officially separated on October 2nd and that they had a prenup in place.

Us Weekly also obtained court documents relating to Maren and Ryan’s divorce settlement. The former couple agreed to every issue relating to their divorce, although they will not be declared officially divorced until a judge signs off on their settlement.
Maren and Ryan’s Relationship Started with a Song
Ryan and Maren are both songwriters, and that’s how they met. In 2014, they co-wrote a hit song for Tim McGraw called “Last Turn Home.” Maren claimed they were just friends at first
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Maren said, “We were paired together six years ago to write a song.” She told the outlet that her relationship with Ryan “just kind of grew from there.” Maren explained that music “has always been really intertwined in our love for each other.” Ryan and Maren got married in March 2018.
A year after their wedding, Maren told Us Weekly what made their marriage work. Maren claimed she had “learned so much” from Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s relationship. Maren said that Keith and Nicole have a “two-week rule.” Allegedly, Keith and Nicole are never apart for longer than two weeks at a time.
Maren told Us, “It makes me and Ryan feel like this could be normal for us as well.”
Maren and Ryan’s divorce agreement states that they will share custody of their 3-year-old son, Hayes. Ryan will also receive $2,100 per month in child support from Maren. Sadly, the “two-week rule” that Keith and Nicole allegedly live by did not work for Maren and Ryan.
In 2019, Maren told Esquire that touring during her first year of marriage “was probably the hardest part of our relationship.” She said that they went on their honeymoon, and then Maren immediately left Ryan to go on a “gigantic tour opening for Niall Horan.” Maren called that a “tough summer.”
She even claimed that she and Ryan started going to therapy as a result of this separation due to work. Maren alleged that marriage therapy initially worked for her and Ryan. She told Esquire, “We have grown so much closer because we had to make some hard decisions and have some tough talks about what this future looks like.
Maren Isn’t Ready for a New Relationship
Fans have been waiting for Maren to break her silence about her divorce. While Maren hasn’t gone public with specific details about her breakup with Ryan, on December 13, 2023, Maren did open up during an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show.
Prior to her appearance on the Stern Show, Maren also alluded to her breakup in an Instagram Story. She wrote, “Cut all hair off… Adopt a dog… Get back on antidepressants.” Maren had cut her hair into a shorter bob, and Howard asked her about her new look during her appearance on the show. Maren joked that she had “cut all the trauma” out of her hair.
Then Howard and Maren talked more seriously about the topic. Maren said that a lot of people who are close to her have gone through breakups or divorces recently.

To which Maren replied, “It’s ongoing. I would like this to sort of wrap up.” Maren told Howard that she’s not ready for another relationship. She said, “I don’t have the headspace for that yet.”
Maren Is Looking Forward to the New Year
Before their son Hayes was born in 2020, Ryan also shared personal details with Us. Ryan said, “I had a buddy tell me right before our kid came, ‘Remember that first and foremost, you have to be nice to each other.” Ryan explained how good that advice was, saying, “There are so many moments where you’re like, ‘I have nothing left. I have no nice left in me.”
Maren also shared an inspiring quote on social media with her hopes for this new year. She wrote, “2024 will be deeply personal. It will be the long-awaited apology to yourself. Nothing and no one will keep that from you.” She concluded her message by writing, “You are about to walk into the greatest life of your life.”
