Serena Williams is one of the most well-known athletes in the world. Her dominance on the tennis courts took the world by storm and inspired many people to follow the sport.
However, a lot of people forget that Serena and Drake were allegedly a thing back in the early 2010s. Now with the Drake and Kendrick beef, Serena is finding herself in the crosshairs.
Rumors of Drake and Serena dating started around 2011 and continued for several years. The two were both at the height of their popularity and could have potentially been the power couple of the decade.

However, the pair seemingly never took things to the next level. Their theorized relationship was heavily covered in the tabloids, but neither would confirm that they were dating.
Fast forward to 2015, the speculation on the couple’s relationship had largely cooled, but the two were spotted at a Cincinnati restaurant. The person who saw the pair said they were making out. Drake was also spotted watching the WTA championship the same day.
The same year, Drake also attended Serena’s matches at Wimbledon. However, the two haven’t been seen much since. Additionally, Serena was asked in a press conference about her relationship with Drake, to which she responded by saying they were just good friends.
The Diss Track
By now, everyone probably knows of the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. The two have been throwing shade at each other online and in new songs.
However, the new beef between Serena and Drake actually stems from an album he released with 21 Savage. In the song Middle of the Ocean, Drake calls out Serena’s husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

The lyrics are a little cryptic, but some have theorized that they allude to a sushi restaurant named Nobu. It is possible that Drake and Alexis Ohanian got into an argument there. Alexis may not have liked her and Drake’s relationship, or the two may have simply not gotten along.
But the verse just before is a clear call-out. Drake says “Serena your husband a groupie.” Whatever happened, it’s pretty clear that there is bad blood between Alexis and Drake. But that isn’t the end of the story, because Kendrick Lamar responded in a song of his own.
Kendrick’s Response
After Drake released Middle of the Ocean, Kendrick Lamar decided to defend Serena in his new song. Kendrick released Not Like Us in May 2024, just as his beef with Drake was reaching new heights. The song explicitly tells Drake not to talk bad about Serena.
Serena recently spoke out about the song during an interview at Essence Fest in New Orleans. She even says it’s the “hit of the summer.” The crowd voraciously cheers after mentioning how much she loves the song.

Serena was attending Essence Fest to show off her new cosmetic line. However, the conversations involved a range of topics, including growing up in Compton and the beginning of her tennis career.
It’s unlikely that the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake will end anytime soon, but it is good to see Kendrick stand up for Serena after what some consider a cheap shot by Drake.
