According to Mayo Clinic, sarcoidosis is a disease that involves a tiny collection of inflammatory cells growing in a part of the body. In Campbell’s case, the growths were in her lungs, which is one of the most common areas of the body that the disease affects. However, it can affect the eyes, heart, and other organs.

It is more likely to affect Black women compared to white men and women. As it progresses, there is a risk of organ damage, and this was something Campbell feared.

Tisha Said She ‘Felt Like An Elephant Was On My Chest’

The My Wife and Kids actress shared that she first realized something was wrong after the birth of her son, Xen. At the time, she was working on the comedy series with Damon Wayans, and she shared that she “felt like an elephant was on my chest,” according to Essence. Thinking it to be pneumonia, she took a range of medications until she noticed lesions on her arms and neck and went to see her doctor.

A biopsy confirmed she has Stage I sarcoidosis. There are four stages to this disease. She was immediately put on steroids, which led to some other health problems including her being diagnosed with pre-diabetes.

The disease did get worse, getting to the Stage II point after the birth of her second son, Ezekiel. Her doctors were concerned that it would get worse, pointing out that Bernie Mac had Stage IV of the disease, which led to his death linked to pneumonia complications.

Tisha Campbell Is Now in Remission

There is some good news. She shared that following her divorce from Duane Martin, things started to improve. Stress is one of the triggers that makes the disease get worse. She shared that she hasn’t been sick since the divorce.

That divorce happened in 2020. Campbell shares that her doctors can find no signs of the disease now, and she has spent the last four years in remission. While speaking on the podcast, she shares that mental health is important. Stress is a real killer, and it affects many disorders and physical health problems.
