According to Mayo Clinic, sarcoidosis is a disease that involves a tiny collection of inflammatory cells growing in a part of the body. In Campbell’s case, the growths were in her lungs, which is one of the most common areas of the body that the disease affects. However, it can affect the eyes, heart, and other organs.
It is more likely to affect Black women compared to white men and women. As it progresses, there is a risk of organ damage, and this was something Campbell feared.
Tisha Said She ‘Felt Like An Elephant Was On My Chest’
The My Wife and Kids actress shared that she first realized something was wrong after the birth of her son, Xen. At the time, she was working on the comedy series with Damon Wayans, and she shared that she “felt like an elephant was on my chest,” according to Essence. Thinking it to be pneumonia, she took a range of medications until she noticed lesions on her arms and neck and went to see her doctor.
A biopsy confirmed she has Stage I sarcoidosis. There are four stages to this disease. She was immediately put on steroids, which led to some other health problems including her being diagnosed with pre-diabetes.
