Todd and Julie Chrisley have started to pay off their $17.2 million restitution fee. The couple sold their large mansion in Brentwood, Tennessee, for $5.2 million in April 2023, as reported by TMZ. The $17.2 million restitution fee is part of the sentence their judge placed on them following their guilty verdict for tax evasion and bank fraud.
The sale of the home occurred off the market. Off-the-market in real estate means that the house was for sale but was never publicly listed on any real estate sites. The real estate agent will take the listing to a procured list of possible buyers. Since the sale of the property was never made public, it took some time for people to realize that the Chrisleys had sold the house in the first place. The sale occurred while the two were in jail, serving their sentence.
The house itself is a massive property that stretches across 13,279 square feet. Some fans of their show, Chrisley Knows Best, will have seen glimpses of the mansion during its final season.
It contains an indoor basketball court, a professional kitchen with the latest cookware and appliances, a large pool with accompanying jacuzzi, and even hand-painted wallpaper in the main living room. The house was featured a few times on Chrisley Knows Best, particularly when the couple was hosting dinner parties in its dining room or when Todd was working in his study.
Despite the sale of their home, the Chrisleys still have a substantial debt to pay to the court.
The Chrisley’s Legal Proceedings
According to The Tennessean, they have also received some money while in jail. The state of Georgia ended up paying the Chrisleys $1 million through a settlement. The couple had filed a lawsuit against Joshua Waites, the former Director of Special Investigations for Georgia’s Department of Revenue. The lawsuit claimed that Joshua had committed misconduct while investigating Todd and Julie for tax evasion. The state of Georgia settled the lawsuit by paying them $1 million.
This occurred just after the federal government indicted Todd and Julie for tax evasion and bank fraud. The indictment alleged that Julie and Todd had given banks and other financial institutions false information.
This information allowed them to receive millions of dollars in loans, which they used primarily for their own personal benefit. To pay off the loans, they then took out new loans to pay down their old loans. They were eventually found guilty of tax evasion and defrauding banks out of over $30 million.
In addition, Julie faced a few more charges. She was also found guilty of wire fraud and obstruction of justice. Todd was sentenced to 12 years in jail, which he is currently serving at Federal Prison Camp Pensacola in Florida. Julie was sentenced to 7 years in jail. She’s currently serving that time at Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Their sentences started in January 2023.
According to Page Six, their eldest children, Chase and Savannah Chrisley, still maintain the innocence of their parents. Savannah has even taken over custody of her youngest brother, Grayson, and her adopted sister, Chloe. Todd and Julie have also filed an appeal over the court’s decision in an attempt to reverse their charge.
