As discoveries go, finding out your father isn’t your father is just about as big as it gets. This is exactly what happened to Tyler Perry. Perry, a filmmaker, writer and actor, has long been open about his traumatic childhood, particularly the abuse he suffered at the hands of the man he believed was his father, one Emmitt Perry Sr, a carpenter.

The film includes one telling scene where Perry’s cousin attempts to interview Perry Sr, who refuses to participate. It suggested that there were still unresolved issues and tensions between the pair at that time. Even so, Perry has let his abusive past go and since forgiven Emmitt.
