These days, Angela Simmons appears to be madly in love with her rapper boyfriend Yo Gotti. But years earlier, she was famously involved with another name in hip hop, Bow Wow.
They first met when Angela was just 17 years old. According to Heavy Magazine, Angela has claimed that the rapper broke her heart multiple times after their first encounter. Despite this, the truth about their relationship was that they only ever dated briefly, without ever quite making it to the boyfriend/girlfriend level.
Apparently, their relationship broke down due to a big decision Angela had made about her personal life. She told Bow Wow she wanted to wait until marriage, which was not a commitment Bow Wow wanted to make.
However, Bow Wow has since said that their relationship had a huge “What if?” question attached to it. In an interview with E! News, however, Angela made it clear that this came down to Bow Wow’s mistakes.
She said, “Bow and I – we were young. Like – he did a lot of messing up. A lot of it. Cause he was young and having fun and I was like the girl who was probably… ready to commit.”
She acknowledged that the timing wasn’t right for the pair. They continued to be seen together frequently as fellow cast members of Growing Up Hip Hop.
Bow Wow Couldn’t Get Over Angela
In fact, a few years ago, the show saw Bow Wow attempting to shoot his shot with Angela again. In a clip from the season, Bow Wow jokingly asked Angela to marry him and have his kid, although Angela didn’t look too amused.
It wasn’t the only time their romantic past had been acknowledged publicly. It also wasn’t the only time Bow Wow failed to read the room before bringing it up. Last year, he commented on a photo Angela shared on Instagram in what can only be described as cringy.

Angela shared a photo of herself in a bikini while on vacation in Bali. Bow Wow quickly jumped in the comment to write, “I’m just glad I was lucky to take the photo.” By that time, Angela had already appeared to move on with another rapper.
One thing both her hip-hop partners shared was a passion for sharing their admiration for Angela in public. For Yo Gotti, this took the form of repeated romantic shout-outs in his songs.
Yo Gotti Publicly Confessed His Love
The beginnings of their relationship were the subject of a lot of media attention. Last November, Hot News Hip Hop took a look back at the unorthodox approach the rapper took to catching Angela’s attention.
The first hint at a potential romance between the pair came in 2015. When Yo Gotti released his track Down in the DM, he publicly declared his affection for Rev Run’s daughter.
He rapped the lyrics: “And I just followed Angela. Boy, I got a crush on Angela Simmons.” This honest statement of interest received plenty of attention, but, at the time, Angela was not interested in responding to Yo Gotti’s rap about her.
It would be years before the two of them became a couple. In the intervening years, Angela would experience tragedy after the loss of her one-time fiance, Sutton Tennyson, with whom she shared a son, in 2018.
It would be another five years before Yo Gotti and Angela’s names were linked again. Yo Gotti rapped about her again on the song Save It For Me.
Last year, he finally took his chance with her. Angela and Yo Gotti decided to start the year 2023 with the announcement that they were in a relationship. They both took to Instagram to share pictures of each other along with captions declaring what Hot News Hip Hop described as “a declaration of love and mutual admiration.”
Angela shared a series of shots from an elegant photoshoot with Yo Gotti. In the caption, she wrote, “You are all I need and more,” followed by a love heart emoji. She later posted another photo from inside a luxury car, showing her being poured a glass of champagne by her new partner.
Angela Starred in Yo Gotti’s Music Videos
Since going official on social media, the couple have continued to share public displays of their feelings for each other. Yo Gotti has repeatedly been reported to express his love for Angela in other dramatic ways.
For her 36th birthday, he reportedly arranged a collection of expensive and stylish gifts for his partner. These included bouquets of flowers, black Chanel boxes, and white candles.
There was even a saxophone player performing for Angela. The scene also included tribal dancers and took place on a beach.
The footage, shared on Instagram, showed Angela getting emotional as Yo Gotti revealed what he’d done for her. Angela then took to Instagram herself, writing in her stories that she had been touched by the gesture and calling Yo Gotti her “best gift.”
A few months later, Yo Gotti used his music again to celebrate his relationship with Angela. People Magazine reported that the video for his new song, The One, showcased moments from the couple’s new life together.
The 42-year-old rapped about his girlfriend in the “PDA-filled music video” starring both the rapper and Angela. The video was filmed during a trip to Greece and Dubai, and it featured clips of the couple kissing and driving around in a Rolls Royce.
Yo Gotti’s lyrics matched the video. He rapped things like: “You give me butterflies in your stomach, like we still in middle school.” Yo Gotti even admitted on the track that he got “nervous vibes” when he missed Angela.
Angela went on to appear in another of his videos, No Fake Love, which again mused on the pair’s loving relationship.
Bow Wow Is Happy for Angela
After getting so spoiled for her own birthday, Angela decided to treat her partner. Hot News Hip Hop reported that she gifted Yo Gotti a Tesla for his birthday.
They have both stated that, since getting together, they’ve been happier than ever. Many fans have since gone on to wonder how Bow Wow has handled the news of Angela’s happiness.
According to Atlanta Black Star, some online commenters joked that Bow Wow would be furious after Angela showed off her boyfriend online last year. One wrote that “Baby Bow Wow” would be “punching the air” after seeing how happy she was with someone else.
However, Bow Wow has stayed pretty quiet about his ex recently. To be fair, the rapper handled things pretty well a few years ago when questioned about a previous relationship Angela got into with boxer Daniel Jacobs.
In 2020, The Shade Room reported that Bow Wow had responded after seeing the couple on social media. But far from getting jealous, he reportedly said that he was happy for Angela, as well as being a big fan of her boxer boyfriend. He also added that he believed that Angela being with him instead wouldn’t have been the right thing to do.
So apparently, there are no longer any regrets from Angela or Bow Wow over how things went between them. Hopefully, that means that Bow Wow is now done with commenting on Angela’s posts about their shared past.
